Many people automatically use fabric softener to keep their towels soft. Makes sense… but when it comes to towels, it often has the opposite effect. Fabric softener leaves a thin coating on the fibers. At first, this feels soft, but that same layer also makes the towel less absorbent. And that’s exactly what a towel is supposed to do.
High-quality towels, like the ones you find in hotels, don’t get their softness from fabric softener. It comes from the quality of the cotton and the thickness of the fabric. Using fabric softener actually reduces their performance.
So what should you do instead?
- Wash your towels at 40–60°C without fabric softener
- Don’t use too much detergent
- Occasionally tumble dry them for a softer feel
- Or add a small splash of white vinegar to keep fibers open and fresh
At first, new towels may feel slightly stiff or shed a bit of lint. That’s completely normal and will disappear after a few washes. After that, they actually become softer without needing any fabric softener.
